At long last, I've posted the 2 rolls of film that Greg shot while on his trip. View them in the Photos section.
06/23/2002 - The Adventure Ends
Well, the Adventure has come to abrupt end.
After 1 week off the bike, I left Golden, CO on my bike and headed southeast, this past Wednesday. By noon on Thursday and after about 70 miles, my knee was hurting again and was probably not going to get better by only staying off of it for a few days. After some soul searching on the purpose and goal of the trip, I decided to stop while I was ahead and not to continue biking.
I have spent the past couple days driving a rental car back to Elgin and visiting friends along the way. I have also started considering other adventures for the remainder of the summer. Some of my favorites are:
Driving around the US visiting friends
Traveling abroad riding motorcycles or scuba diving
Finding a beach house and sitting back and relaxing
Thank you for all your support and cincern over the past month.

06/17/2002 - Injury Update. Greg's parents sent me this email:
Just got a letter and some pictures from somebody that met Greg on his trip.
It says, “Enclosed are the photographs Laurel and I took of you at Fish Lake
in the Oregon Cascades just before you started your cross-country bicycle
trip. I’m sure you will recognize photograhs 1 & 2. Photograph 3 is Fish
Lake and Photo 4 is the Tire Mountains. (A pioneer lost the metal rim on his
wagon wheel coming over Military Road. Hence the name Tire.) We hope things
are going well and that you will attain your goal.” - Signed Reis and
Laurel.
A look at the map shows Willamette National Forest east of Eugene, so they
must have met up after Greg had ridden to the Pacific Ocean and back.
Probably before his crash. Other than that, he has driven to Golden, Co and
has stayed with some high school friends to recuperate. Saw the doctor
yesterday. X-rays confirmed that he had no permanent damage to his knee, so
he plans to continue east tomorrow.
06/10/02 - Greg got internet access somewhere and sent this email out:
To all,
As mentioned on the website, I was run off the road several days ago and have had a sore knee since then. Yesterday, I had the sports trainers at th local rodeo look at my knee and was given a clean bill of health, except that strenous use, ie uphill riding, of my knee for 7-10 days will irritate the injury and will continue the pain. In light of this, I have decided to jump the mountians and drive to Golden [CO] to recover with some friends, fingers crossed. While in Colorado, I will be developing my film to be added to the tracking website.
Other than the injury the adventure has been great. I have visited Hot Springs, been to the Pacific and hung up with bullfighers, cowboys and cowgirls at the Rodeo and Meeting really gracious and helpful people.
I hope everything is going well for all of you back home and I'll keep everyone posted on the next stage of my adventure.

06/08/02 - Greg called me this afternoon:
Greg's in Sisters, OR. His knee is really hurting him and he's in Sisters looking for a doctor. He met a rodeo clown in the morning who told him he'd let him see the doctors at the rodeo (which is in town)! When he called he was on his way (on foot) to see about that. The day is partialy overcast in about the 50's. He also said there was a clinic down in Bend, OR that he may try to go to if he needs to.
He said the mountains are very very difficult to ride over and that going down hill is very scary (35 mph with all the gear and his small trailer). He's been camping in campgrounds and hanging his food in the trees for bears. He has also been eating his food and has stopped off at resturants for food and cold water.
He did end up stopping off at the hot springs near McKenzie Bridge for about half a day which helped his knee a lot, at first. The day after the hot spring, he said his knee was feeling great, but the day after that he said that he could barely even walk. Greg said that, depending on what the doctor(s) say about his knee, he may end up renting a car and driving to Denver to rest up and then continue the trip from there. He said the mountains he's ridden over were small by comparison to what he's going to be facing and he may just avoid them in the interest of his knee.
06/06/02 - Greg's dad communicated this update to me today:
Heard from him yesterday.
Got to Eugene Saturday afternoon and assembled his bike. Then he headed WEST
(This guy's an Eagle Scout?) Actually he rode out to the coast and put his
foot in the Pacific Ocean. I guess when he get to the Atlantic, he plans to
compare temperature. After that he returned to Eugene and continued EAST.
Apparently as he was riding up some hill, a truck driver thought it would be
'nice' or 'funny' and blew his horn just before he passed and scared Greg
off the road. He fell and twisted his knee. His plan when he called
yesterday was to ride across the McKenzie Bridge (on the map)and on a couple
of miles where there were some 'hot springs.' Then he was going to spend the
rest of the afternoon soaking his aching/sore knee.
The weather is fine and he says the scenery is spectacular.
Below is a map indicating where, relative to his start location of Eugene, McKenzie Bridge is:

Greg will be sending me photos from his trip when he can. Those will be posted on the photos page.
Greg left Eugene Oregon on Saturday June 1, 2002 and will be arriving at Washington D.C. about 90 days later.
This website will be home for maps of his journey, pictures he's taking along the way, and journal entries from Greg. It will be updated as I receive info from Greg.
Maps
Below are thumbnail links to 2 of the 12 general map segments to Greg's trip. You can click on them for full sized versions. I'm attempting to assemble one giant thumbnail map for you to link to, but for now they're broken up into individual pieces. Due to their size, all 12 segmants are available on a separate maps page.

1 - Eugene to Baker City

2 - Baker City to Missoula
If you'd like to send words of encouragement to Greg, he will be checking his email every once in a while. You can email him at greg@bblocksonline.com. If you would like to contact me about this website, please use this form. Thanks!
